Tunes Tuesday: The Feel Goods

Happy first Tuesday of the new year lovely readers!

Music can affect so much of what we do; our productivity, our mood, and sometimes our whole outlook on life. That being said, as it is the beginning of not only a new month, but a new year, I thought it appropriate to fill it with some good vibes. We all know after 2016 we need some. So, to all you readers out there in need of some toe-tapping, heart-warming melodies, here are my top ten “feel good” song choices to bring in 2017 strong.

10. Valerie: Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse has this kind of gritty yet classic feel that brings this song to life. I also really enjoy the Glee version of this track. But either way, this song has a great base drum beat in the background that just keeps it moving. That, tied with it’s kind of jazzy mood, makes this a great song to get up and groove to, in any abode.

9. Daylight: Matt and Kim

Being a uni-student during the winter season, and one a large campus, sometimes it’s difficult to want to leave the comfort of a dorm room and brace the winter winds and frost to walk to class. This song, however, never fails to get me pumped up and moving. It’s gotten me through many sluggish 8 a.m. mornings and always brings a smirk to my face with lyrics like, “I have five clocks in my life, and only one has the time right, I’ll just unplug it for today.” Which I would love to do with my alarm clock most days.

8. Sweet Disposition: The Temper Trap

The opening guitar tabs on this song just melt my heart. Combined with the very smooth voice of the lead vocalist Dougy Mandagi, this one is another song that I use more to help glean myself off and out of sleep. It makes it less of a chore and a great go to when you’re trying to get back into a routine.

7. Dancing Queen: Abba

Who, when they turn seventeen, doesn’t blare this great hit? This moving and hip song by Abba has been rocking in past generations and still continues to do so, in my playlist at least. And with the word “dance” in the title, who can refuse to do just that?

6. I Wanna Dance With Somebody: Whitney Houston

This song has more techno rhythms happening that definitely make you feel like you’re back in the era of disco. So don’t be afraid to bust a move when listening to this track! Or even grab a hairbrush or nearest utensil of choice and belt out along with the amazing voice of Whitney Houston.

5. Hooked on a Feeling: Blue Suede

This one might be familiar to some as it has made a comeback recently in the film Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s another oldie but goodie, with some cowbell to boot. This one will make you want to get on your toes with the nearest friend from Milky Way or any Galaxy of your choosing.

4. Friday I’m in Love: The Cure

Thank goodness for Fridays, the end of the work week and always a welcoming day to freedom and the weekend. This song has a wonderful way of going through the days of the week, and mentioning that even though they’re dreary or that anything can happen, that at least when Friday rolls around there’s love and wonder in store. Which through a rough week, is sometimes all you need to recharge before it all begins again.

3. Do You Believe in Magic: The Lovin’ Spoonful

Maybe this one is just nostalgic for me, but I remember listening to this song with my dad just rolling down the street and eating ice cream. It also may or may not have littered a lot of old time movies. But either way, who doesn’t want to believe in magic in a young girl’s heart? It’s just such a sweet tune and very easy to listen to.

2. Ooh Child (Things are Gonna Get Easier): The Five Stairsteps

Another from the Guardians of the Galaxy, but if we’re creating a feel good playlist, who doesn’t want to hear that things are going to get better? Hearing isn’t always believing, but maybe playing this song a few times will at least make the minutes pass by a little easier.

1. Here Comes the Sun: The Beetles

This is kind of the classic song I think of when I think of a feel good song. That the sun is coming, even though it may not feel like it during this winter weather. Or even less literally, in all of our lives when things get tough, that it’s alright. Everything will be okay. The smiles will return and so will better times. As the lyrics say, “Sun, sun, sun, here it comes!”

So there you have it! I hope these songs have put a spring in your step or brought a smile to your face. I know they do for me, and definitely did as I was writing this. Or maybe you have a song that you always turn to when chasing away the blues, feel free to share! We could all use a little positivity to encourage us as this new year unfolds.

Keep Rockin’,

Ellen Renee
